Sunggee Min

Jewellery as Wearable Sculpture

Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Sunggee moved to Melbourne in 2000. With a background in literature and philosophy, he developed an appreciation for ideas, meaning and the ways people experience the world. Yet, alongside his academic interests, he always felt a strong desire to create with his hands and express himself through making.

His creative journey led him to explore a variety of artistic practices, including drawing, painting and traditional Korean paper craft. Through these experiences, he gradually discovered metal smithing, a craft that brought together his fascination with form, material and the possibilities of working with his hands. In 2007, he began creating jewellery, finding a way to translate his ideas into tangible objects through the combination of artistic expression and craftsmanship.

Inspired by nature, organic forms and the quiet beauty of the natural world, Sunggee’s work explores the relationship between shape, volume, texture and space. Moving beyond conventional jewellery forms, his pieces possess a distinctive sculptural presence, reflecting his interest in the expressive possibilities of metal.

His jewellery transforms precious metal into small, wearable works of art. Each piece explores form, volume and texture, bringing the beauty of sculpture to jewellery design. Through considered shapes, tactile surfaces and the interplay of light and shadow, his work invites the wearer to appreciate jewellery not only as an adornment, but also as an object of artistic expression.

Based in Melbourne’s inner north, Sunggee continues to explore the possibilities of metal as an artistic medium, creating distinctive jewellery that reflects his journey, his curiosity and his enduring desire to make things by hand.
